iPhone officially announced in Ireland
As usual For once, TechnoEssence got something right!

o2 Ireland confirmed last night that the iPhone will be released in Ireland on the 14th of March for St. Patrick’s Weekend. Word on Tariffs is still yet to come. It will be available with all the usual specifications (as per other countries), in sizes of 8GB and 16GB.
The models will be priced €399 and €499 respectively.
EDIT: Tariffs have been announced and placed on the o2.ie website. Click more to see them.
Again, we want your opinions on people living in Ireland who currently have unlocked iPhones, and how they feel about this. -Ed

Anyway, I’ve got an unlocked iPhone working very nicely on Meteor except I don’t have EDGE activated. WiFi working fine for me at home and work - haven’t tried Eircom hotspots. Best phone ever!! O2 tariff is very steep but I might have gone for it if it had been unlimited data (like the rest of the world has). Anyhow, it transpires that O2 won’t let me in!!! Thanks Danuta Gray.

Very valid point Alec! However, I did say all the ‘usual specifications’ and not features, as in it is the same phone as other countries. Voicemail would be more part of Network Specifications, and not exactly the phone itself.
They have been quoted as saying that it won’t be there ‘on release’ so don’t fret, it’s probably coming soon.
Nice to see you around though,
Ed

Ed,
You probably misunderstood my reference to EDGE. I’ve DECIDED not to activate EDGE on my Meteor account. Using Meteor in ISP mode on iPhone would incur a cost of nearly €5 per MB downloaded. Yes, that’s right per MEGABYTE!!!
Bill Gates I’m not …

Sort of puts the O2 tariff in perspective, eh? They’re talking about 1GB included with a €45 monthly charge. At the Meteor rates that’d be €5000!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Less vague comments please Alec..lol
Yes, it does, definitely.
Hope to see you commenting around..

As usual us silly little Irish get robbed.
Has anyone compared the o2 deal to Austria’s price plan. They launched today also.
And guess what they get for their money:
39 euro/month = 3GB data / 1000 Minutes / free T-Mobile Wifi
55 euro/month = 3GB data / 4000 Minutes* / 1000 SMS / free T-Mobile Wifi
Now it could just be me but that seems like a lot more value for money than o2 Ireland.
What kind of fools do they take us for. Instead of trying to get people to switch to o2 because they have decent rates or service and throw the iPhone into the mix as a sweeter to sink the deal. No let’s try appeal to the few people that want to be seen with a “look at how much this cost me” phone.
I suppose o2 shops will require a DNA sample next so they can track you down if you do anything they don’t want you doing.
How can it be cheaper to buy an iPhone, unlock it and use it with an o2 Pay as You Go sim card and get so much more value for your money.
Of course now they will make you sign up to a contract in the shop there and then.
I hope nobody buys the phone over here until they release the Irish aren’t just second class people who they can charge what they want and we’ll still pay it. The same thing happened in the UK and since not many people bought it the tariffs were raised considerably.

I have to say, that I know! This is absolutely ridiculous…I’m so happy that I have an unlocked iPhone on Vodafone…
It works like a treat. O2 really tried to do it this time. Just as a matter of interest..did anyone see queues outside O2 or Carphone Warehouse Stores? I hope not.
Ed.
